Plot summary When Edmond Dantes sailed into Marseilles harbor that day in 1815, he was surrounded by enemies. His shipmate, Danglars, coveted his appointment as captain of the Pharaoh. Ferdinand Mondego wished to wed Mercedes, who was betrothed to Edmond. Danglars and Ferdinand wrote a note accusing Edmond of carrying a letter from Elba to the Bonapartist committee in Paris. On his wedding day Edmond was arrested and taken before a deputy named Villefort, a political turncoat, who to protect himself, had Edmond secretly imprisoned in the dungeons of the Chateau D’If. There Dantes’ incarceration was secured by the plotting if his enemies outside the prison notably Villefort, who wished to cover up his own father’s connections with Bonapartists. Years passed. Then one night Edmond heard the sound of digging from an adjoining cell. Days later a section of the flooring fell in and Edmond saw an old man in the narrow tunnel below. He was the Abbe Faria, whose attempt to dig his was to freedom had led him only to Edmond’s cell. Thereafter the two met daily, and the old man taught Edmond history, mathematics, and languages. In Edmond’s fourteen years of imprisonment Faria, mortally ill, told Edmond where to fin a tremendous fortune should he escape after the old man’s death. When death did come, the abbe’s body was placed in a sack, and Edmond conceived the idea of changing places with the dead man, whom he dragged through the tunnel into his own bed. Jailer threw the sack into the sea. Edmond ripped the cloth and swam through the darkness to an islet in the bay. At daybreak he was picked up by a gang of smugglers with whom he worked until a stroke of luck brought him to island of Monte Cristo, where Faria’s fortune awaited him. He landed on the island with the crew of the ship, and, feigning injury in a fall, persuaded the crew to leave him behind until they could return for him. He returned to the mainland and there he learned that his father had died and Mercedes, despairing of Edmond’s return, had married Ferdinand. He also knew that Villefort had gained fortune and station in life. Danglars was a rich banker. Ferdinand had won wealth and a title in the Greek war. Edmond took the name of his treasure island. As the Count of Monte Cristo de dazzled all Paris with his fabulous wealth and his social graces. Meanwhile he was slowly plotting the ruin of the four men who had caused him to be sent to the Chateau D’If. Caderousse was the first to be destroyed. Monte-Cristo had awakened his greed with the gift of a diamond. Later, urged by his wife, Caderousse had committed robbery and murder. The wealth of mythic themes permeate this novel, particularly important are those of death and resurrection. These two myths inform the entire structure of the book and have a special impact in all ages characterized by social and political instability and rapid change. The first begins with the hero in a state of relative innocence, followed by a fall which resembles the catastrophe of death in the life of a man which after fourteen years of living locked up in a prison, leads to a hard-won but spectacular resurrection into a position of power far beyond any known by ordinary mortals (Marinetti 263). The first mythical theme called ‘death’ covers Dantes? mprisonment, escape, and discovery of the treasure willed to him by Father Faria. While in jail, Dantes soon comes to look upon himself as dead and to think of the world outside as that of the living. Its presence in the novel reminds us that Edmund has imprisoned and isolated himself so that he can pursue his schemes of revenge. Its a symbol of deprivation and pain. The rocky desert Isle of Monte Cristo: serves as a more vivid and ornate symbol. Beginning as a sign of wealth and power, passing through a stage as a fantastic pleasure,  it comes to symbolize the redemption that is possible when Edmund Dantes finally gives up trying to play God. Another prominent symbol is the sea: Edmund begins his adventures as a nineteen-year-old sailor coming  home to the port of Marseilles. He wastes years in the depths of an island prison, but is re-baptized to freedom, when he is thrown into the water for dead. One nom de guerre he gives himself is Sinbad the Sailor. Community members can assist peace officers by being the eyes and ears within the neighborhood. A Neighborhood Watch program will be effective only if community members participate and cooperate with law enforcement to reduce crime within their neighborhood. A very important element to maintaining a Neighborhood Watch is to report suspicious activities and individuals that may cause harm to the neighborhood. A Neighborhood Watch is a crime prevention program that recruits energetic citizens in collaboration with the local police agency to help diminish high crime rates, solve conflicts within the community, and make the neighborhoods safer and improve the quality of life in their community. Neighborhood watch is a program that has a successful effect on the community. The success of any Neighborhood Watch Program depends on the participation and dedication of its members as well as knowledge and information† (Neighborhood, 2009). In doing so citizens are taught how to help themselves and the community by distinguishing and exposure to any suspicious or unlawful activities, protect their love ones, their property, and those of their neighbor’s property and family. A Neighborhood Watch focus on surveillance in order to develop awareness as a means of keeping its members alert of community activities. This program also makes use of plans that each affiliate should notify each specific member hurriedly in the occurrence of illegal activity in the neighborhood to active citizen’s patrols by groups. Citizens involved in neighborhood watch programs provide assistance within the community such as abnormal measures whenever they are observed, reporting crime, and given that support to crime victims. Neighborhood watch programs use street signs to help reduce crimes, prevent thefts, and burglaries by warning the unauthorized persons that they are being watched at all times by surveillance cameras. In a neighborhood watch program every member has the same responsibility and dedication to have a productive neighborhood watch program. The law enforcement agency provides support and direction as well as an active workforce and logistical support to the efforts of the neighborhood watch program. Citizens trying to implement such a program are tired of all the crimes being committed in their area such as murder, burglary, robbery, gangs, drugs, and graffiti. Citizens are frustrated with the way crimes take over a neighborhood and the daily activities society has to face. Some people would come home in fear for their lives dreading the thought of being murdered or shot, sounds of gun shots from a drive-by shooter leaving those to run for shelter, kidnapped, or even robbed. Society is feed up and wants one thing out of the neighborhood watch program and that is to bring a community together in a safer and normal environment to bring back control of their neighborhoods and reduce crime rates in that area. Crimes in the community can get out of control due to drugs, gangs, graffiti, robberies, and burglaries if it shows that no one cares. These types of neighborhoods with these types of problems can give the appearance that no one cares which can cause crime to increase. By dealing with the disorder and keeping an open communication and partnership with the police department and other agencies a reduction in crime will soon follow. A Neighborhood Watch Program will provide the community with members to learn how to prevent crimes to prevent the Broken Window Theory (1982) which consists of a problem solving theory based on the idea that one unchecked problem may lead to other problems. Crimes can flourish in areas in which disorderly behavior goes unchecked. For example, an abandon house can lead to graffiti, illegal dumping, prostitution, and drinking in public. Most criminals believe they reduce their chances of being caught if they operate on streets that show signs of neglect by the community. The members are concerned about their community and they feel the crime that occurs in their neighborhood is just as bad as the crime that occurs within 77th Street Division. 77th Street community members consist of 25 African American and Hispanic Descent members with low or middle class income. 77th Street community members are extremely concerned about their area, and feel ignored or threatened by the police and politicians and is begging for help. The success of the Neighborhood Watch Program depends on the participation and dedication of the residents as well as knowledge and information being received (Neighborhood, 2009). Attempting to start a neighborhood watch program may intimidate the community due to the type of the crimes that are currently committed by people the residents face day to day. In addition, community members will be able to discuss crime statistics in the area and bring a list of local and international contacts to help with the organizing, and maintenance of the community program (Neighborhood, 2009). West LA is number 2 out of the 21 divisions within LAPD to have fewer crimes. West Los Angeles Area has fewer crimes than 77th Street’s area except for BFMV’s due to criminals from other areas that come to WLA’s area only to commit crimes such as burglary. West LA provides their community members within the area to keep valuables out of their vehicle or locked up inside the vehicle to prevent a theft. The community relation office has the youth from the juvenile programs passed out flyers and stickers to each home and vehicle where the crime occur the most. A Neighborhood Watch program can be effective and ineffective in various neighborhoods, depending on the rapport that an individual’s possess with community members and city officials. In order for such programs to be effective all participants including residents and city officials are expected to work together to resolve common goals and that is to raise community awareness in safety and crime prevention. â€Å"Typically, Neighborhood Watch groups organize to respond to an immediate threat-a series of rapes, a sharp increase in burglaries, rising fear of street crime†(Crime Prevention, 2009). For instance, West Los Angeles community members are proactive and involved in neighborhood programs so they can protect their property and their wealth. A major concern is maintaining a safe environment in the areas where their children are raised. These are some of the reasons neighborhood watch programs are effective in certain areas because residents know that their voices will make a difference. Residents of the community often find it necessary to attend community meetings suggesting new ideas in regard to safety, outreach programs and making complaints about concerns in the community. Residents are often are assertive in protecting their assets such as homes, cars, businesses, which plays a huge part their everyday image and lifestyle. Crime rates in the West Los Angeles areas are lower than South Los Angeles because residents bond together and are often more proactive in reporting crime when it occurs. In South L. A. community members have different outlooks in his or her community and possess different relationships with city officials and peace officers. Many residents living in the community do not own the property in which they reside so therefore, they are not concerned about the surroundings and what is revolving around them until it is too late. Residents have negative outlooks on support from city officials because of different situations they have experienced. Members are also reluctant in participating in such programs due to fear that he or she may be labeled as a snitch or fear of retaliation which is one of many reasons crime statistics are so high. When residents are afraid to come forward and report incidents, crime continues because the individuals committing these crimes have not been apprehended. When the negative outweighs the positive in communities, the success rates for neighborhood watch programs are ineffective. Recommendations to improve the communication and relationship between the community and police agencies are to improve the communication between the two. It is the responsibility of a police agency to provide meetings to address drug abuse, gang awareness, elderly abuse, rape prevention, and providing information on how to protect their homes such as proper lighting that surrounds a home. It is important to acknowledge the success and recognize the community’s volunteers through yearly carnivals, community dinners, and providing an Open House to the police and fire stations. National Night Out is conducted by each police agency by law and is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch. National Night Out is opening the up a police station to the community so the community can be aware of what police officer job duties are to protect the community from harm. 77th Division needs bridge the gap they have with the community and open up more through neighborhood churches, schools, and neighborhood watches. In conclusion, a Neighborhood Watch Program helps families to control the activities within their neighborhood and staying in control. To improve the relationship it starts with educating the community of what to be aware of and how to provide information to the police department instead of ignoring the problem as if it doesn’t exist. A neighborhood can enhance their identity and pride through the above recommendations by having Open House, Carnivals, and providing a National Night Out each year. Crime prevention is more important to a Neighborhood Watch member which assist the neighborhood to safe from any harm doing. In the three texts I have studies the writers all name and refer to their characters in different ways. For example in The Road the characters are not given names and in Small Island all the characters are named and referred to in detail. Firstly mc McCarthy doesn’t give his characters names throughout his narrative he only refers to them as, the man, â€Å"papa† and the boy which shows they are father and son and that is all the detail McCarthy reveals. The significance of this is to create the effect that this dystopia they live in could happen to absolutely anyone. McCarthy has also done this to create a statement that names are no longer important since the world has ended and all civilisations have been wiped out. The only important this is surviving. McCarthy mentions the boy was born into the post apocalypse s so maybe the boy hasn’t even been given a name through the fact he doesn’t need one since there is no civilisation and there is a nil chance of survival, therefore there is no one to give your name to. McCarthy could also be revealing that maybe the parents didn’t think it was important in naming the boy because they wouldn’t survive. In Small Island Levy names her characters very stereotypically through their personalities. Queenies christened name is Victoria â€Å"I was christened victoria† like the late queen, but forever been called Queenie, which is what her mother wanted to christen her as but the vicar wouldn’t allow it as it was a common name so he suggested Victoria. Levy chose this name as it reflects Queenies character very well as she is very well mannered and â€Å"posh† like the queen. Gilberts name reveals that he is half white through the fact that Gilbert Joseph is a common white man name. Levy also reveals that his father is white by referring his to as â€Å"light skinned†. Hortense’s name reveals that she is not English however it also reveals that she is wealthy and higher class through the fact that Hortense is a French name which automatically stereotypically reveals Hortense’s character is going to be higher class which she is. Levy also refers to her characters in racist ways by addressing and describing the black characters as â€Å"darkies† and â€Å"niggers† the significance of this is to show when the novel was set â€Å"1948† when being racist was common and most English people were, in which Levy has took advantage of to make her narrative realistic. Finally in Rossetti’s poetry, Rossetti refers to men in different negative ways. For example in Goblin Market Rossetti refers men to a Goblins she has done this to reveal her emotions of men implying that they are all vial and evil. However, the word â€Å"Goblin† could also mean gold which could be implying that all men are rich which is true because in the 19th century it was only men who had money, so she could be implying that men are rare and rich. However, still men in Rossetti’s poems are shown to be negative which is interoperating that wealth isn’t all that good. Rossetti also gives her characters common names such as â€Å"Maude Clare†, â€Å"Laura† and â€Å"Lizzie† the significance of this is to make her poems still mysterious and open for interpretations which she does in all of her poems. Rossetti also refers to her characters through social class and skin tone she does this as it was a main importance in the 19th century. To compare all the writers I have studies both Levy and Rossetti refer and name their characters through social class in some way. However, McCarthy doesn’t mention social class or interpratate it in any way. He has done this because there is no longer any social class unlike in when Small Island and Rossetti’s when it was highly mentioned with the time they are set in. In conclusion in all the texts I have studied the writers all texts I have studied the writers all name their characters in different ways for different significance and to create different effects to their narratives. But also to affect the reader differently for example McCarthy doesn’t give names to his characters to give the narrative lack of information as it could be happen to anyone but also to give the reader no emotional connection to the novel.

In the summer of 2016, recreational divers discovered fragments of pottery of the East coast of Crete near the Palace at Zakros. The fragments depicted artwork resembling that of ancient Minoan culture, specific to the Late Minoan IA-IB period. A team of archeologists returned to the location to start a week long search for any other Minoan artifacts. Divers were able to locate a shipwreck where the artifacts originated from. The ship, which was named by divers as â€Å"Minos’s Treasureâ€Å" (there is no substantiated claim to be connected to the mythical King; the divers thought it was a clever name) , is located at DMS- 35 °5’38.395†N 26 °17’23.783†E at a depth of 20 meters. The site is approximately 1.65 miles/2.65 km from the Palace of Zakros and 341.15 miles/549 km from present day Alexandria (see attached images). â€Å"Minos’s Treasureâ€Å" was completely covered in sediment, which is why the site had not had been uncovered unt il now. Consequently, the sediment preserved the ship remarkably well.
